Today, we are setting off for a new journey: far less long and with a considerably smaller group, but interesting nonetheless. This year, our pilgrimage is going to start in Arles.

The event, which took place at the university cinema of Scala in the early evening of May 10th, was marked by a shared consideration about the beauties of the Caucasus. The students of the Centre for Early Medieval Studies were trying to convey their experiences which they have gathered during several field trips into the region since 2016 to the attendees. In particular, they presented various pieces of information about Armenia - a country with a rich cultural history.

On April 9–13th, a lecture series/block course by Katharina Meinicke (Universität Wien) titled The Umayyad Visual Culture between Continuity and Change took place in the Hans Belting Library. The course presented an overview of the visual culture of the empire of the first islamic dynasty, the Umayyads (AD 661–750), which was, figuratively speaking, a superpower on the crossroads, in the sense of both geography and history.
