Following up on a first conference in 2017, this year, the contributions regarding physical or imaginary places of transition in medieval art were conceived in pairs......

The International Summer School (Moravian) Middle Ages in the Mirror of the 20th century takes place at Masaryk University at the Hans Belting Library. The summer school is held in cooperation with the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and the University of Zagreb in Croatia.

More than a year has passed since the group of Migrating Art Historians got off the train at the railway station in Brno, after having walked 1500 km on foot. Today, we are setting off for a new journey: far less long and with a considerably smaller group, but interesting nonetheless. This year, our pilgrimage is going to start in Arles.

After the gathering in Scala, which was devoted to the topic of the Armenian cultural genocide, the organisers of the Center for Early Medieval Studies have prepared a new field trip to explore the monuments in the Caucasus. The journey which will take place from May 26th to June 2nd will be already our fourth expedition into the region.

The organisers of the Center for Early Medieval Studies at the Department of Art History would like to cordially invite you to the lecture by prof. Daniela Mondini titled Furtum Sacrilegum. The "Holy Heads" of Peter and Paul and a Lost Fresco Cycle in the Lateran Basilica in Rome. The lecture will take place on Tuesday, May 15th, at 18.00, in the Hans Belting Library. It will be devoted to the reliquaries containing the remains of St. Peter and St. Paul as well as to the currently-already-lost cycle of frescos in the Lateran Basilica.

The event, which took place at the university cinema of Scala in the early evening of May 10th, was marked by a shared consideration about the beauties of the Caucasus. The students of the Centre for Early Medieval Studies were trying to convey their experiences which they have gathered during several field trips into the region since 2016 to the attendees. In particular, they presented various pieces of information about Armenia - a country with a rich cultural history.

Since 2016, the Centre for Early Medieval Studies have already organised several study trips to explore the monuments of the medieval Caucasus. During these trips, we have not only collected a lot of new pieces of knowledge and intriguing questions, but also rich visual material - as well as considerations about how to share at least a part of it with you all. And so, we would now like to invite you all to our multi-genre meeting titled On Cultural Genocide, Memory and Beauty: The Art of Medieval Armenia.

After the introductory words by prof. Kroupa, the Head of the Centre for Early Medieval Studies, Ivan Foletti, presented his inaugurating professor-to-be lecture titled Step out of the Shade. Constantinople, Ravenny, Rome and the year 500 in the premises of the Moravian Gallery in Brno, on May 3, 2018.

On April 9–13th, a lecture series/block course by Katharina Meinicke (Universität Wien) titled The Umayyad Visual Culture between Continuity and Change took place in the Hans Belting Library. The course presented an overview of the visual culture of the empire of the first islamic dynasty, the Umayyads (AD 661–750), which was, figuratively speaking, a superpower on the crossroads, in the sense of both geography and history.

On Thursday, April 5, a public lecture from the series "Middle Ages, differently" took place in the Hans Belting Library. The lecture titled On the Path towards Eternity: The Face of the Empress between Illusion and Representation was presented by Teodora Georgievova.
